Moving to Southlake in the middle of a school year is routine for the schools and a real planning job for you. The enrollment paperwork is the easy part, and I already covered it in enrolling in Southlake schools after you buy, so I am not repeating it here. This post is about everything around it: the date you pick, the records clock, high school athletics and a campus change coming in 2027.
Here is the downside I would rather tell you now. A closing date is negotiated between a buyer and a seller. The school calendar is not negotiable at all, and the two will not line up on their own. You have to line them up on purpose, and that needs to happen before you write the offer, not after.
Everything below about Carroll ISD only applies if the address is in Carroll ISD. About 22 percent of Southlake's land area is in Northwest, Keller or Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, and each one has its own calendar, its own campuses and its own process. I cover that in my Southlake schools guide. Confirm the district and campus by street address with the district, then build the plan.
If you have any control over the date, aim for a seam. These are the dates published for this school year. I pulled them from calendar summaries of the district's schedule, so confirm them on the district calendar before you plan around them.
The cleanest window this year is winter break. A child who starts on January 5 starts with everyone else, at the top of a grading period. Spring break is the next best. If you are moving in May, ask yourself whether it makes more sense to finish the year at the old school, if the old district allows it, and start fresh in August.
Say you want a January 5 start. Winter break means offices may be short-staffed or closed for part of those two weeks, so you do not want to discover a missing form on December 22. Call the campus while you are under contract, and find out what they need and who handles it over break.
Then look at the gap between your closing and your start date. Carroll's campus pages say registration takes proof of residency, immunization records and documentation from the previous school. If your closing slips, your proof of residency slips with it. Ask the enrollment office now what happens if that occurs, and have a plan for those days.
Texas law puts some real numbers on this. Under Education Code Section 25.002, a parent has 30 days after enrollment to provide proof of identity and records from the last school. When a parent asks, the old district has 10 working days to furnish those documents. Plan on that 10-day window running into a holiday if you move in December.
My advice: request records from the old school before you withdraw, and carry your own copies of the latest report card, the transcript and any special services paperwork. Do not count on the transfer happening on its own by your start date.
The Texas Department of State Health Services says a student moving from one Texas school to another can enroll provisionally for up to 30 days while the record is sorted out. The state's page does not address out-of-state transfers, so if you are coming from another state, call the campus nurse before you move.
That matters because the 2026-27 Texas list may not match what your old state required. It includes two doses each of hepatitis A and varicella, and a meningococcal dose for grades 7 to 12. Pull your child's shot record now and compare it to the state list.
Carroll splits high school across two campuses: Carroll High School for grades 9 and 10 and Carroll Senior High School for grades 11 and 12. Courses, credits and sequencing are where a mid-year move gets complicated. I am not going to tell you how a partial-year course will transfer, because that is a counselor's call based on the transcript. Carroll High's counseling office has a Moving to Carroll page, and I would send the transcript over as early as they will take it.
This is the one that catches people off guard. Under the UIL rules, any new student in grades 9 to 12 has to complete a new student eligibility questionnaire before playing in a high school contest. If the student practiced or competed for the former school in grades 8 to 12, the student is presumed to have changed schools for athletic purposes until the Previous Athletic Participation Form process is finished. That means the family moved, the new school and the old school both signed, and the District Executive Committee approved it.
A student found to have changed schools for athletic purposes is ineligible for varsity contests for at least one calendar year. A real family move is one of the steps that clears the presumption, but it does not settle the question by itself. The one-year rule applies even if both parents move, when the change is found to be for athletic purposes. The process still has to run, and it takes TIME. If varsity athletics is part of the plan, talk to the campus athletic coordinator before you close. This is general information, not an eligibility ruling.
If you are buying this year, the school your child starts in may not be the one they attend next fall. In January 2026 the Carroll ISD board voted to close Durham Intermediate, effective with the 2027-28 school year. Fifth graders will stay on elementary campuses, grades 6 to 8 move to a two-middle-school model, and feeder patterns change. The district says students outside a new boundary are grandfathered until they move to the next school level.
If your child lands at an intermediate school this January, the next campus may not be the one the old feeder map shows. It is not a reason to avoid the move, but you should know it going in. Details are on the district's consolidation page.
I can build the closing timeline around the school date, and I will tell you straight when a date is not going to work. The school pieces belong to the district, so get their answers in writing.
For Carroll ISD in 2026-27, winter break is the cleanest window. Published calendar summaries show the second grading period ending December 18 and students returning January 5, so a new student starts at the top of a grading period. Confirm the dates with the district.
Under Texas Education Code Section 25.002, a parent has 30 days after enrollment to provide proof of identity and records from the last school. When asked, the prior district has 10 working days to furnish them. Request records early, especially around a holiday.
Not automatically. A new student in grades 9 to 12 must complete the UIL new student eligibility questionnaire, and a student who practiced or competed for the former school goes through the Previous Athletic Participation Form process. The District Executive Committee decides. Ask the campus before you close.
Trying to make a closing date and a first day of school line up? Tell me both dates and I will help you work out the contract timeline. You can read more on my Southlake page.
