What it's like

The short version

Farmersville sits in eastern Collin County on U.S. 380 and State Highway 78, 18 miles east of McKinney. Once called the Onion Capital of North Texas, it keeps a downtown on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Chaparral Trail starts here.

What's for sale

Homes sold at a median near $240,000 in the three months ending September 2026. Population rose from 4,976 in 2025 to an estimated 5,742 in 2026.

What it does well

Strong here

  • Established neighborhoods●●●
Settlers arrived in the 1840s, and the downtown joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
  • Quiet, small-town pace●●○
A red brick downtown with a monthly market at the Onion Shed and Old Time Saturday each October.
  • A real downtown●●○
The downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places, with red brick streets, shops and boutiques.
  • Lake days●●○
The northern end of Lavon Lake lies at the city's western limits.

The honest part

What to know first

  • One address in Farmersville scores 36 on Walk Score.
  • Farmersville is not among the six cities in the Collin County Transit service area.
  • Dallas is about an hour away.

Not its strength: walkable, transit options, vibrant, big-city energy, restaurants, shopping, parks and trails, horses welcome, new construction, luxury homes.

Not rated yet: nightlife, golf, land and acreage. That means I haven't confirmed it either way, not that it isn't here.
