What it's like

The short version

Highland Park is a 2.2-square-mile residential island city in Dallas County, laid out in 1907 by Wilbur David Cook and George E. Kessler. A fifth of its original land was set aside for parks, and Highland Park Village, opened in 1931, is a National Historic Landmark at Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road.

What's for sale

Homes sold at a median near $3 million in September 2026. Strict zoning has been in place since 1990, and new homes come from remaining lots and replacing older buildings.

The honest part

What to know first

  • DART bus, GoLink and paratransit no longer serve the town.
  • Growth comes from remaining lots and replacing older buildings.

Not its strength: transit options, quiet, small-town pace, nightlife, lake days, land and acreage, horses welcome, new construction.

Not rated yet: walkable. That means I haven't confirmed it either way, not that it isn't here.
