Burleson property taxes, explained

September 30, 2026 · Burleson, Texas

The number buyers forget to ask about is the one that follows them every single year. In Burleson your property tax bill depends on more than the price of the house — it depends on which county you are in, which school district you are in, and whether the neighborhood carries a special district. Here is how it actually works.

Your bill is a stack, not one rate

A Texas property tax bill is several taxing units added together. In Burleson that usually means:

Each one sets its own rate per $100 of taxable value. Add them up and you have your total.

The two biggest lines: city and school

Taxing unit2025 rate per $1002024
City of Burleson$0.7218$0.6627
Burleson ISD$1.2552$1.2552

2025 rates are the ones on the bills most homeowners paid last winter. Rates for 2026 are adopted each September; confirm them with the Johnson County or Tarrant County tax office before you budget.

The city adopted its voter-approval rate for 2025. The no-new-revenue rate — the one that would have collected the same money from the same homes as the year before — was $0.6591.

Why the county line matters

Burleson sits in both Johnson and Tarrant counties. Which side you are on decides:

Here is the part that surprises people: Burleson ISD crosses that line too. Its taxes are collected by the Johnson County tax assessor, but homes are valued by both appraisal districts, depending on location. Same school district, two different appraisers.

The homestead exemption got a lot bigger

In November 2025 Texas voters raised the school district homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000. Homeowners 65 and older or disabled saw their additional school exemption go from $10,000 to $60,000 — up to $200,000 off the school portion in total. The increase applied back to the 2025 tax year. (For how Texas ended up with two different “homestead” laws, see the Texas homestead exemption, and the two laws everyone confuses.)

The City of Burleson raised its own homestead exemption from 3% to 5% of appraised value in 2024, and offers exemptions for residents 65 and older and for disabled residents.

For veterans: a veteran rated 100% disabled or individually unemployable by the VA pays no property tax on their homestead at all. Lower ratings get a partial exemption. The details are in the Texas disabled veteran exemption.

What it looks like on a real number

A $350,000 home in Burleson ISD, inside city limits, with a homestead exemption, at 2025 rates:

LineTaxable valueTax
Burleson ISD$350,000 less $140,000$210,000$2,636
City of Burleson$350,000 less 5%$332,500$2,400
City and school$5,036

Before county and other districts. A homeowner 65 or older would save roughly another $753 on the school line alone. This is an illustration, not a quote.

The line item new construction buyers miss

Master-planned communities often pay for their roads, parks and utilities through a special district. Chisholm Summit uses a Public Improvement District. Tallgrass will sit in a Municipal Maintenance District outside city limits. Two homes at the same price can carry different monthly payments because one carries that extra assessment, and it never shows up in the county average anyone quotes you. More in before you buy that new build on the edge of DFW.

What I check before you write an offer

  1. Which county and appraisal district the home is in
  2. The school district for that exact address
  3. Whether the seller’s current bill includes exemptions you will not get — a 65-and-over freeze or a veteran exemption
  4. Whether there is a PID, MMD or other special assessment
  5. Your estimated bill at your price, not the seller’s old value

That third one bites people. If the seller is over 65 or a disabled veteran, their tax bill can look tiny. Yours will not be.

Common questions

Do disabled veterans pay property tax in Burleson?

A veteran rated 100% disabled or individually unemployable by the VA is fully exempt on their homestead under Texas Tax Code Section 11.131. Lower ratings receive a partial exemption.
